David Bardell

After an initial career in dairy farming, I graduated as a vet from Liverpool University in 1998. I spent 5 years in a truly mixed first opinion practice, then moved to a specialist equine referral practice for 2 years, before returning to Liverpool University in 2006 as a clinician teacher in the equine hospital. I gained the RCVS Certificate in Veterinary Anaesthesia in 2007, followed by the ECVAA Diploma in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia in 2011. I became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2015 before stepping out of clinical work in 2016 to undertake a full time research position investigating the molecular mechanisms involved in human and equine tendon disease, subsequently being awarded a PhD in 2021 for my thesis on the role of microRNA:target interactions in tendinopathy. After returning to clinical work I was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and a Personal Chair in Veterinary Anaesthesia at Liverpool University in 2023, where I am currently Professor of Veterinary Anaesthesia. I teach at under- and post-graduate levels, have lectured internationally and published on equine anaesthesia, critical care and pain management topics. Most recently I have become involved in environmental science and wildlife research. I am a member of the Vets with Horsepower initiative which provides internationally accredited CPD training whilst additionally raising funds for human and equine charities.
